The Shrill carder bee (Bombus sylvarum) is one of the rarest and most threatened bumblebee species in England and Wales. Once widespread, it now only exists in five isolated population areas.

REINTRODUCING

BEES

The Short-haired bumblebee reintroduction project aims to reintroduce this lost species to the UK.

It was last recorded near Dungeness in 1988 and was declared extinct in 2000.

West Country Buzz is a front-runner project, piloting Defra’s Nature Recovery Network initiative. Working to restore bumblebee species that we have largely lost from our countryside.

IT'S NOT JUST THE BEES

Whilst the projects that you can see here are aimed at saving, supporting and encouraging bees they also help sustain and protect many other species of pollinators, doing the same vital role as bees. Such as Moths, Butterflies, Hoverflies and Beetles. So helping bees also helps maintain many other important pollinators that we simply can not live without.
